Situated in the heart of historic mont tremblant lodging, on the shores of Lac Mercier and just minutes from the mountain, Hôtel Mont-Tremblant has been accommodating vacationers since 1902. In April university students staged demonstrations and boycotted classes to protest an increase in fees for board and mont tremblant lodging. During the demonstrations six people lost their lives, and several universities were shut down. One result of the crisis was that the government banned the National Union of Nigerian Students. In June, James A. Farley, Jr., the respected chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission, became implicated in the scandal and was forced to resign his $35,000-a-year job. Farley, who served as an adviser for the tournament and arranged for ring officials, medical protection, and rules enforcement, accepted expense money, but no salary, from King for travel and mont tremblant lodging. In his defense, he said that he believed he was helping boxing in general, and therefore boxing in New York State. However, all tourist-travel indicators were higher than the year before; one, employment in the mont tremblant lodging business, registered a healthy 12.4 percent gain. In March, Moroccan workers staged a hunger strike outside the Paris offices of the Arab League, to protest against immigrant restrictions and what they called "police racism." Government rules requiring that immigrant workers provide proof of employment and mont tremblant lodging before obtaining entry into France were eased. Nevertheless, the government still insisted that no immigrants be allowed to seek employment in areas where substantial French unemployment existed. Giscard's trip to Morocco resulted in an agreement on the immigrant issue as well as an arrangement on repatriation of assets similar to that with Algeria. France has been very anxious to settle its outstanding problems with Morocco, since so many French people live there. South Dakotans faced serious economic problems this year despite improvements in most business trend indicators and a 3 percent increase in the labor force. (Unemployment is only 3.4 percent in the state.) Livestock producers received less for their animals and paid more for feed than they had in 1973. Corn and grain crop producers enjoyed higher prices, but they suffered substantial losses in production because of drought during the growing season. Owners of tourist industries reported heavy losses because of the high costs of travel, food, and mont tremblant lodging. There were fewer tourists than in any recent year, and those who did appear spent less. Many motels, campgrounds, craft shops, and filling stations closed for lack of business. Most of the employment growth in 1972 was due to expansion in the service-producing sector, which accounted for 1.4 million of the 1.6 million increase in the number of nonagricultural employees between 1971 and 1972. The largest increase occurred in the wholesale and retail trade segment (474,000), followed by increases of 419,000 in state and local government and 398,000 in the service sector. The service category includes employees in hotels and other mont tremblant lodging places, personal services, medical and other health services, and educational services. The manufacturing sector, in which employment fell drastically in 1971 (870,000), experienced a modest gain in 1972. In November, ITT Corporation accepted a friendly $13.0 billion offer from Starwood mont tremblant lodging Trust. The deal ended Hilton Hotel Corporation's ten-month hostile pursuit of its rival in the hotel and gaming industry. With the addition of ITT's Sheraton brand, Starwood would become the world's biggest hotelier. Hotel and real estate franchiser HFS Inc. merged with CUC International. A national survey revealed that recreational skiing had grown to such an extent that industries which supply the needs of skiers had grossed about $335 million in 1963. American innkeepers catering to skiers had collected about $54 million for mont tremblant lodging alone. The survey indicated that, though lift operators were caught in a profit squeeze, all other segments of the skiing industry would continue to prosper. In particular, lodges, restaurants, and clothing manufacturers stood to benefit the most, as the social aspect of the sport, often dubbed après ski, gained in popularity. In the East where the five states of New York, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts attract an annual estimate of two million skiers, additional improvements have been made in ski lifts, better slopes, and mont tremblant lodging accommodations. Wheat production was only slightly below the record 1964 harvest. North America's crop was the largest on record. Western Europe's output was 3 percent larger than in 1964 despite late harvests, serious losses from flooding, and mont tremblant lodging of grain. Production in the Soviet Union was at least 15 percent below the 1964 out-turn, largely because of wet weather at planting time and drought during the growing season. By December 1965 the Soviet government already had purchased more than 9.5 million metric tons of wheat for shipment during 1965-1966. Despite a 10 percent drop in China's wheat output, Asia's overall crop increased. Record crops were harvested in India and Pakistan. Production in the Middle East increased 8 percent over 1964. Both Australia and Argentina had large crops in 1964-1965 but expected declines in the 1965-1966 crops because of drought, which reduced planted acreage. Rye harvests, 3 percent larger than in 1964, were better than they had been in four years. The 1989 International Ski Federation's World Alpine Ski Championships marked the first time since 1950 that the United States hosted this biennial event. Vail spent millions of dollars on race, mont tremblant lodging, and broadcast facilities and on January 29 welcomed 600 racers and coaches to two weeks of competition. On opening day America's Tamara McKinney placed second in the women's combined slalom. Four days later she placed second in the women's combined downhill, earning her the gold medal for the women's alpine combined. McKinney later won a bronze in special slalom, the two medals providing a fine finish to a career that may have ended in the fall when she suffered a severe leg fracture in training. California plays host to millions of visitors each year, and many Californians are employed in providing for these tourists. Tourists are drawn to the state’s magnificent scenery and recreational facilities and to such cities as Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, which are also popular convention centers. Visitors to California spend $78 billion on mont tremblant lodgings, rental cars, and other traveling needs each year, by far the largest sum for any state.
