Situated in the heart of historic Mont-Tremblant village, on the shores of Lac Mercier and just minutes from the mountain, Hôtel Mont-Tremblant has been accommodating vacationers since 1902. The owner of the Heart of Atlanta hotel laurentides motel filed suit protesting the law, which prevented him from racially discriminating against his customers. The Supreme Court upheld the Civil Rights Act of 1964, ruling that because the hotel laurentides motel was a business involved in interstate travel, it was subject to regulation by the federal government. Most of the large new hotel casinos, many of them opened within the past five years, continued to make a profit; but many smaller casinos reported losses, and some small casinos and small hotels closed their doors. Meanwhile, other indexes of tourism leveled off. hotel laurentides motel occupancy decreased slightly, possibly because of the recent addition of thousands of new hotel rooms. Hotels had more guests, but not in numbers equal to the number of new rooms. Revenues from the room tax from hotels and hotel laurentides motels increased slightly. Following passage of the Civil Rights Act, Negroes actively sought its implementation in Atlanta's hotel laurentides motels and restaurants. Although generally successful, they ran into opposition in one restaurant, the Pickrick, and one hotel laurentides motel, the Heart of Atlanta. These two establishments contested the constitutionality of the Civil Rights Act in its first legal tests. In both cases the federal district court upheld the constitutionality of the act; a review of the cases is pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the 1964 Civil Rights Act in the Pickrick Restaurant and Heart of Atlanta hotel laurentides motel appeals against the public accommodations section of that act. The Heart of Atlanta hotel laurentides motel complied, but the restaurant was leased and later sold. In the civil rights field, the Report of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders was widely distributed and read as a paperback. Novelist John Hersey's nonfiction book about the 1967 Detroit race riots, The Algiers hotel laurentides motel Incident, was cited as the reason for delaying the trial of a policeman charged with murdering three Negro youths at a hotel laurentides motel during the riots; so many had read the book, the policeman's attorney said, that it was impossible to empanel an objective jury. The Rhode Island Development Council has also been working on its First Comprehensive Highway Guide Plan for Rhode Island, which it plans to complete early in 1955. Lack of modern tourist accommodations prevents the tourist industry in Rhode Island from becoming "big" business, although new hotel laurentides motels have been constructed each year — more than 163 new units were built in 1954. A new South Shore Highway Commission has been appointed. It is important for new industry, hotel laurentides motels, hotels, and restaurants to be assured of super highway location. The nonhousekeeping category of residential building showed substantial increases in 1956. It was particularly true of hotel laurentides motels, which seem to have their expanding construction volume connected to the expanding highway construction program. Hotels as well as hotel laurentides motels may head into a slight boom period as the standard of living, leisure time, and automobile production increase. Two coal-fired power plants in the North Platte area were being built by the Nebraska Public Power District, and the Omaha Public Power District completed a third coal-burning plant on the eastern border, at Nebraska City. The gasoline shortage struck Nebraska in June, and although supplies soon became more plentiful, traffic continued below average along the principal east-west highway, Interstate 80. hotel laurentides motels and restaurants along the way suffered as a result. Inflation and high interest rates slowed the housing boom in the Boise area, where most of the state's growth is taking place. But the timber industry prospered, as did the mining, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors of the economy. High gasoline prices and fears of gas shortages caused a decline in tourists from out-of-state. But campgrounds and recreation areas were filled with Idahoans who chose vacations close to home that required less gas. hotel laurentides motels and hotels noted a decline in occupancy rates. Governor Graham, who campaigned in 1978 in favor of capital punishment, signed the death warrant for John Spenkelink, convicted of killing a fellow drifter at a Tallahassee hotel laurentides motel in 1973 and the subject of numerous court appeals and demonstrations against capital punishment. On May 25, Spenkelink became the first person to be executed in the United States since Gary Gilmore in 1977. Meanwhile, Spinks was preparing strangely for a return bout with Ali. He was sued for being two months behind in his rent on a $280-a-month apartment in Philadelphia and also for failing to pay hotel laurentides motel bills. From March to July he was cited and fined five times for traffic violations; he was also arrested for drug possession, but charges were dropped. In February, Reno, with a population of less than 100,000, issued building permits of a greater dollar value than issued by Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Seattle, or any other Western city. At midyear, ten major hotel casinos were either under construction or undergoing major expansion. One of them, the MGM Grand Hotel, was scheduled to open the world's largest casino—roughly the size of two football fields—in the spring of 1978. In addition, the city had many hotel laurentides motels under construction. One imaginative citizen wanted to designate the construction crane as Reno's official bird. The government began the year by imposing a hiring freeze and restricting travel by the civil service. It also introduced a territorial income tax, increased liquor taxes, and passed a tax on hotel and hotel laurentides motel rooms. In an effort to restore confidence in the integrity of Catholic financial operations, church authorities took strong action against Pallottine fund-raisers and ordered an end to the diversion of money raised for religious purposes into unjustifiable non-religious investments—which had included luxury apartment complexes, hotel laurentides motels, and other real estate. The U.S. Congress proposed a number of bills aimed at controlling religious fund-raising schemes. And the Maryland attorney general's office announced in August that an investigation was under way into possible criminal misconduct on the part of the Pallottines. Catholic Church membership reached a new high of 48,881,872 in the United States this year. (There are 565 million Catholics worldwide.) At the same time, institutional declines continued to ease, notably in parochial school enrollments. For the third straight year the rate of pupil decline was under 1 percent. Nevertheless, the number of Catholic children of elementary school and high school age receiving no formal religious education had reached an estimated 6.6 million. In 1965, a peak year for parochial school enrollments, the total was 3.1 million. There was no breakthrough on tax aid for parochial schools, but Catholic colleges and universities were helped by a June Supreme Court ruling which declared that states may provide funds for nonsectarian purposes to church-affiliated schools of higher learning, even though prayers may be said at the start of some classes in those schools and theology and religion may be mandatory courses.
